When I woke up this morning, my eyes were stuck closed from watering too much. The perfect way to start the last day of 2011.

Since then, I've been feeling headache-y, nauseated, tired, sore throat-y, and cough-prone. My eyes are so red that I look like a monster's, and I'm soon to run out of orange juice, which leaves me breathless with concern. I don't even have the energy to check if the History Channel's running a marathon of The History of Sex, which I've watched like five times.

But you know? It's okay. It's just a blip. I ended the year financially stable, with a job I love and all the anxiety of the last job gone. It's the best gift I could have ever given myself.

Still no comment from my Yuletide recipient. :(

I did, however, survive giving my cat a bath tonight. The day after Christmas, she surprised me with the gift of a disturbing amount of dandruff, which wasn't coming out through brushing, so it had to be done. She cried, I cried, no one got scratched, surely only through angelic intervention. Afterwards, it took three hours, a wet food treat, some cat nip, and the heat cranked up the speed up drying time, but I think she's finally forgiven me. And her hair does look better.

I wonder what would happen if I used pet shampoo on my own hair.
mizzmarvel: (angel version 1602)
One of my Yuletide gifts may have just caused me to buy a few 1602 trades. And by a few, I mean all of them. Even the first one, which I already own in comic book form. And I also really, really need to rewatch Captain America asap. Seriously, this is pretty much how I feel about Yuletide this year: <3___<3

But the person for whom I wrote has yet to comment on my fic. I hope they're just on vacation or something and that they don't just hate the story.
mizzmarvel: (christmas lights - misce_lee_eous)
I'll write something up about Christmas presents and their awesomeness later. But first: the Yuletide Fairy has been very, very good to me this year. I got two incredibly awesome, amazing stories that were everything I wanted.

The Same, but More -- a Captain America (2011) story set midway through the movie, in which Steve is shy and uncertain and Bucky is aggressive yet guarded. SEXY TIMES ENSUE.

the lay of your lands -- a Marvel 1602 fic in which John Storm and Peter Parquagh have adventures and tell stories and fall in love. Totally gorgeous.

Now there's a present from [livejournal.com profile] horsescanswim under my tree. :D And a card from [livejournal.com profile] derien and [livejournal.com profile] eor!

...I was going to post more, but then I spent a day filled with loudness and family (not mine) and food, so I'm just going to cuddle my cat and collapse. Though I may have to brew up a cup of hot chocolate first.

Breaking news: Someone is WRONG on the INTERNET.

I hate this random person's fic (none of you, flist ♥) and I feel like a jerk because my hatred is so darn visceral. I've certainly read many, many worse fics, but this one's over-the-top characterization, blithe ignorance of canon, and stilted melodrama put me over the edge. It's like the written equivalent of nails on a chalkboard

On a happier note, my little stupid $8 Christmas tree now has presents from [livejournal.com profile] magikfanfic and [livejournal.com profile] derien underneath it. :DDD Why isn't it Sunday yet?
mizzmarvel: (santa - thuri)
Still working on my Yuletide story, but I think there may finally be an end in sight. In the meantime, here, have an $8 Target Christmas tree:

Featuring cards from [livejournal.com profile] thepastperfect (which has an AWESOME cartoon of Byron and Jeff), [livejournal.com profile] osprey_archer, [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel, and [livejournal.com profile] lauren5678 and a present AND cookies from [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory. (Best madeleines in the world or best madeleines in the world? Oh my Goooooood.)

The Hello Kitty stocking is for my cat. Obviously.

I saw this meme on [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel's journal and it made me smile, so:

Give me a pairing and I will tell you:

who is the big spoon/little spoon
what is their favorite non-sexual activity
who uses all the hot water in the morning
what they order from take out
what is the most trivial thing they fight over
who does most of the cleaning
what has a season pass in their DVR
who controls the netflix queue
who calls up the super/landlord when the heat’s not working
who steals the blankets
who leaves their stuff around
who remembers to buy the milk
who remembers anniversaries

Also, I did all my chores today, even the grossest one (litterbox-cleaning day). I'm absurdly proud about it. Now I just need to concentrate on addressing holiday cards...and starting my Yuletide fic...and work stuff...sigh.

Today's Dimestore Dame is the Blonde Phantom! Seriously, whenever I read her Golden Age comics, I just go all chin-handsy and go, "She's sooooo preeeeeeetty." Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel for some scans of her She-Hulk era appearances!

And now, the sad number of books I read in November.

books read last month )
mizzmarvel: (marvel girls - icon_teahouse)
I forgot to mention that this week's Marvel Dimestore Dame was Deathbird.

Also, I woke up today to find myself sick. My throat and lungs kind of hurt a lot. Oddly, drinking water just makes them hurt worse. That can't be good.
mizzmarvel: (santa - thuri)
Step One

- Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

- Surf around your friendslist (or friends friends, or just random journals, or [livejournal.com profile] holiday_wishes/[livejournal.com profile] wishlist) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

THE VERDICT IS IN. I'm thrilled to know that the majority of people joined me on Team Blue. For those of you who had no idea what any of this means, there's a recurring joke in the movie where Flora (red fairy) and Merryweather (blue fairy) keep fighting over whether Aurora's birthday dress should be pink or blue. Here's the ending scene:

As a small child, I always got irrationally furious because, to me, blue was CLEARLY the better choice. To this day, I have a lingering resentment toward Flora because of this all-important issue. It was probably because I liked blue better than pink, but I remember feeling incredibly vindicated when I read Little House in the Big Woods and Ma Ingalls preferred her blonde girl in blue too.

I assume Aurora wears the pink version of her dress on merchandise because a) little girls often like pink, and the only other Disney Princess who wears it on a regular basis is Ariel (and Ariel shouldn't be wearing pink ever); and b) Cinderella's gown is often blue. Of course, Jasmine's main outfit is blue as well, but she's not always included as part of the main princess crew for reasons that are surely not at all racist. (In my head canon, she's too busy jumping Aladdin's bones to hang out at every single lunch party.)

But anyway, I do actually Aurora's her corset/peasant number a lot too. In terms of design, Aurora's actually one of my favorite princesses. In terms of everything, picking favorites becomes way, way harder.

[Poll #1797345]

I had very strong, vocal opinions about this issue, even when I was a very small child. Everyone who chooses the wrong dress will be defriended immediately. Okay, maybe not.

Semi on topic, but you can tell that Beauty and the Beast is a fantasy because I've never known a natural brunette white girl who can pull yellow off like Belle can. Also the singing candlestick stuff.

Before I left New York, I started a project in which I was going to read all the American Girl books and review them. When I stopped reading AG, Addy was the newest girl, so it was going to be an interesting mix of revisiting the old and jumping into the new. At the time, I lived 5 minutes from a library, which made procuring the books really easy.

I only got through the intro books, Meet ______, before I moved. Since I don't have a lot of interest in buying the whole series (especially since some of the books really suck), I scrapped the project. Maybe when I get my license and a car, I can get to a library again and start it. Until then, here are my notes on the books I did read, since some people have expressed interest.

Today I actually went out and did stuff, which was pretty exciting considering I spend most of my Saturdays streaming Netflix and napping.

First off: the Cincinnati Zoo, which I have to say is pretty awesome. Whenever I go to a zoo, I'm overwhelmed with thoughts like, Okay, this thing can't be real. It's a robot. Or Jim Henson's Creature Shop designed this. Giraffes, for example, are too bizarre to exist, even as they stand in front of me. The only creatures that are entirely exempt from this are the apes, because they seem so close to human. And the cats, because they're all just big Sorshas to me. I constantly struggle to remind myself that lions do not want me to scratch behind their ears and given them some Purina One.

Maybe I need to watch Grizzly Man again.

Anyway, then it was off to the mall. This was especially hard because for whatever reason, I felt like buying ALL THE THINGS. But I managed to restrict myself to a bar of LUSH soap and a tiny bottle of Philosophy body wash. Because those are things I totally needed. But I did at least manage to put down a million boxes of Christmas cards, face wash, tins of tea, a Fossil watch that I want rather desperately, all of Sephora, and a ton of other things. I call that a success.

Not a success: this boring post.

Yuletide -- so nice, I did it thrice.

First of all, thank you! )

I spent Friday through this evening working a convention in town. I'd only ever been to conventions as a guest before, and while I mean to write about it in the next day or two, right now I'm in that weird state where I'm bone-tired and yet also restless and bored. So I think I'm going to stare at the ceiling for a while until I lose the will to be awake.

I do have to say that if I could go back in time and tell grader schooler me, who cried and hid in the bathroom at the prospect of having to watch Hellraiser, that I would eventually spend three days seated directly across from the guy who played the pinhead dude, little me would have peed her pants with fear.

This week on Dimestore Dames, I ramble about Mary Jane Watson.

And, wow. MJ is one of those characters where I end up with 9000000 awesome scans of her being great. Picking and choosing was hard, man. Most of them went out the window for having not-my-favorite '90s McFarlane art.

I know I'm fully integrated back into Midwest life when a walk of less than a mile seems insurmountable to me. Hell, some days the mailbox seems way too far away. Stupid cars and your ease of transport.

This is part of why I bought a stationary bike, you see -- so I can ride miles and miles without ever having to put decent clothes on or interact with anyone other than my cat.
