I got my Dimestore Dame up a day late. She is Cecilia Reyes.

Today I celebrated getting paid by buying $30 worth of Canadian tea (which is not a weird euphemism) and then severely overeating at Chilis. Holy Moses. I need to crawl off to bed and concentrate on digesting.

bike time

I've actually been using my exercise bike every day this week, going at least 5 miles, sometimes a little over. This probably doesn't sound like a big deal, but considering my general exercise routine has involved walking to the mailbox once a week, this is hugely exciting for me.

And you know? I already feel a lot better, generally. There's a self-esteem aspect, seeing my endurance improve a little each day. But I also just feel upbeat and happier afterwards. Go go endorphins! Let's just see if I can keep up the routine.

See, this is part of the problem I had with P.E. as a kid -- the exercise I like to do (biking and walks), I very, very much enjoy. The competitive sports I was forced to participate in were humiliating and something I dreaded each day. I'm simply not a very good runner, even when I was running laps every weekday and taking walks after school and in the best shape of my life. I spent a lot more time figuring out how to avoid running back and forth than enjoying being outdoors and physical activity. If I had been allowed to speed-walk the track for the full hour, I would have had a lot more positive attitude about the whole thing.

(In 0 Period P.E., which a lot of honors students took to free up a class during the main school day, we were originally allowed to just walk around, which I did happily for a few weeks. Then it was discovered that some of the more zealous students were ducking out of the walks to crouch behind the dumpsters and study flashcards for other classes, so we were made to play basketball or volleyball instead. This is so sitcom-esque comically nerdy that I wouldn't believe it was true if I hadn't witnessed some of these kids with my own eyes.)

mizzmarvel: (happy halloween!)
I spotted these goodies from Hostess today while I was out shopping.

from the makers of Flash Cakes and Globallz... )

I didn't have it in me to buy them, though. From my experience with Flash Cakes and Globallz, they will taste like something that belongs in one of the middle levels of Hell. What I did buy was a bag of Halloween candy, which probably guarantees that my, like, five year streak of getting a grand total of zero trick-or-treaters will continue.
mizzmarvel: (happy halloween!)
This week on Dimestore Dames, I look at one of my favorite witchy women, Agatha Harkness

Also, here's a meme nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] entwashian:

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door.' Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and...well, you know the drill. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!
mizzmarvel: (spidey/torch catfight!)
I don't do recs as often as I should, but here's one for you: Johnny/Peter and their sex luggage from [livejournal.com profile] traincat. She really captures everything I want and love about the couple--their friendship and chemistry and ease together. Peter/Mary Jane is my Spidey OTP in the mainstream Marvel Universe, but Peter/Johnny is the only thing I ship in Ultimate.

Speaking of which. Er. I feel like a jerk for saying it, but I have serious mixed feelings about Miles Morales. It actually has nothing to do with Miles himself; I think it's awesome to have a person of color in such a major role, and to reexamine the concept of Spider-Man from a new POV. But I love Ultimate Peter so much that the concept of him dying is irrationally upsetting to me. Like, I know there's a very good chance he'll come back at some point. I'm not new to this. I feel incredibly stupid to be feeling like, "WHY YOU KILL MY PETER HE'S A BABY." But that's where I am. And I know this is how some people felt about Ted dying and Jaime becoming Blue Beetle, and they got over it, and so will I.

I know a part of it is me feeling betrayed by Ultimate Marvel. I was really against Ultimate when it was launched (long story, but I thought Quesada was hypocritical in championing it), but I came to love it and embrace it. But slowly, surely, it betrayed me by basically killing off scores of characters, writing them OOC for the sake of DRAMAZ, and just being gross. I mentioned in Dimestore once that shortly after Wasp was killed in 616, she was killed in Ultimate and was shown being eaten by the Blob in a full-page spread. This shit isn't the Marvel I love. It turns my stomach that there are so few comics I can wholeheartedly recommend to minors these days. (And I had recommended Ultimate Spider-Man to young teens, several times.)

Anyway. Enough whining, more drinking Pumpkin Spice Silk.

ETA: Apparently the post to the Johnny/Peter drabble is locked. Oops! I rec it anyway.

ETA: It's unlocked! You can read it now!

Sorsha had a gentleman caller yesterday.

at least I think it was a boy )

He seemed pretty interested in her, while she was interested in growling and telling him to get the hell away from her air conditioner. It's good to know that if an evil gang of stray cats breaks in here, Sorsha has my back. Of course, if an evil human were to break in, she'd trot over to make friends.

tea time

So, that fic commentary meme going around? I'm in, if anyone's interested. I've done one for Flood Tide and The Allure of Sweatervests, but my other fic can be found here.

Also, today I spent way too much at Jungle Jim's (beware: the website starts playing a song almost immediately) on almost all totally unessential items, like cheese crowns and honey butter and barrel pickles and Walkers crisps, then celebrated by coming home and buying expensive tea online*. It's nice to be in a situation where I actually make enough money to spend some, but maybe I need to have my debit card taken away for a little while.

* Though, in my defense (?), I do drink like four cups of tea a day at this point, so tea is something I usually need. But not in my defense, I already have like nine varieties of tea bags/loose tea/tea concentrate. And I asked the open post on Jezebel tonight for recommendations, so I have a million new ones I want to try. Um. At least I haven't bought a Threadless shirt in a while?

One day late, but the Marvel Dimestore Dame this week is (unsurprisingly) Karma.

Now, if you'll excuse me, my tummy hurts and I'm going to go lay down.
mizzmarvel: (mirror mirror on the wall)
Does anyone have any good scans of Shan aka Karma from New Mutants? Or know where I might find any? The post is nearly written, but I seem to have accumulated only one not totally crappy image. Blah. :/

In any case, the post is coming late this week.

I don't think I've ever done a fan casting before. But today it occurred to me that while I've seen several that feature the BSC members as older teens, I can't remember seeing one that cast people in their actual age ranges.

For those who never read the books or haven't picked one up in years, the original baby-sitters were 12 when the club started, eventually aging to 13. Two 11-year-olds were added to the club later. The covers tend to make the girls look like older teens or even young adults, which downplays the fact that people are hiring 6th graders to care for their infants.

Anyway, facts: Kristy and Stacey were the easiest to cast. Claudia was the hardest. Mallory's bitchface delights me. All of these kids range in age from 11 to 14. I hope my Google Image searches this afternoon don't land me on some sort of FBI watch list.

Say hello to your friends )

Today on Dimestore Dames, I ramble about Pepper Potts.

Also, last night I got to revisit one of my most common dream themes: it's the first day of school and I can't find one of my classes. Like, DAYS will go by and I'll pass through all these bizarre classrooms around campus, ones that look like greenhouses and movie theatres, and never find the one I'm looking for. And it is always, always high school in these dreams. Like, in last night's dream I started panicking about being college competitive and I actually stopped to think, Wait, don't you have a B.A. in Archaeology?

I'm not going to even pretend this doesn't say way too much about my personality.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

To console myself over my failed rice experiment, I made pancakes tonight. They came out delicious, fluffy and golden brown. That'll show you, rice.

burn-y

mizzmarvel: (torch is flaming)
Tonight I tried cooking rice for the first time. Result: a burned pot and a smoky apartment. I can't seem to get the smell out, even after having the window open and using a box fan for hours. And now my head hurts. And I'm demoralized from the loss of the rice.

In other words, I cannot cook worth a damn. Canned ravioli for me from now on.

Also, I bought an exercise bike to fight against outgrowing all my pants. We'll see how that goes.

This week on Dimestore Dames, I know stuff about Layla Miller.

Also, that coat I was coveting this weekend? I found it for way cheaper on Overstock and it came today and it fits perfectly and I love it SO MUCH and this sentence is finally going to end now.

Steve Jobs died, and that gave me a sad. Happy things instead:

1. Finally got the first of my final two freelance checks! It arrived late due to it getting sent to my old address. Despite my giving them my new address. Oh well. It's here now!

2. Since I finished my last hair story ever (!!!), I had free time tonight and was able to spend a few hours reading for the pleasure of it. I'm ashamed to say I haven't read that long just for fun in months.

3. Listening to "Winter Wrap Up" on repeat, which is ironic considering that we're just getting into Mackenzie's Seasons of Sadness. I don't even think it's the shorter days that get to me so much as the cold. I just don't tolerate it well.

4. Fried green peas.

5. Going to bed early in cute pajama bottoms. They have sugar skulls on them.
mizzmarvel: (medusa - art by ryuloulou @ deviantart)
With any luck, by the end of the night I'll have written my last hair magazine story EVER. \o/ And I say 'with any luck' because I think I might actually be a little sick, due to major tummy problems, and I pretty much just want to go to sleep right now. This might not sound any different than usual, but I assure you, it is.

Moving on. I stole this from [livejournal.com profile] traincat:

1.) Give me a pairing.
2.) Give me an AU setting.
3.) I will write you a three-sentence fic.
mizzmarvel: (I subscribe to Nerdular Nerdence)
September was not the best reading month. But I did listen to a lot of books, at least! I don't really count them in my yearly reading total, but I still want to review them. Audiobooks are marked with an asterisk.

books of September )

Also, I want this coat SO MUCH, so I'm just going to keep refreshing the page until it's like $100 cheaper.

This week on Dimestore Dames, I get catty with Tigra.

Also, I've discovered that Target carries my brand of bra for less than $20. So, basically I should just hand over my paychecks to Target from now on, because I no longer have any need to shop elsewhere. Or be anywhere else or, frankly, to love anything else.
