Steve Jobs died, and that gave me a sad. Happy things instead:

1. Finally got the first of my final two freelance checks! It arrived late due to it getting sent to my old address. Despite my giving them my new address. Oh well. It's here now!

2. Since I finished my last hair story ever (!!!), I had free time tonight and was able to spend a few hours reading for the pleasure of it. I'm ashamed to say I haven't read that long just for fun in months.

3. Listening to "Winter Wrap Up" on repeat, which is ironic considering that we're just getting into Mackenzie's Seasons of Sadness. I don't even think it's the shorter days that get to me so much as the cold. I just don't tolerate it well.

4. Fried green peas.

5. Going to bed early in cute pajama bottoms. They have sugar skulls on them.

FACT: No Dimestore Dames post from me this week. I decided I needed to take the week off, by which I actually mean that whenever I went to start it, it felt like I was mentally running face-first into a brick wall.

FACT: The level to which I am now enjoying Criminal Minds is disturbing, since until a few weeks ago I only vaguely knew it as that show that starred Greg from Dharma & Greg and terrifying close-ups of Mandy Patinkin's face.

FACT: I shouldn't be allowed to go to Target anymore, because every time I do, I end up spending dozens of dollars. Dozens, I tell you!

FACT: Relatedly, I've pretty much embraced my life of prematurely middle-aged spinsterhood by buying a roomy chemise, not unlike the kinds my great-grandmother liked to wear when I lived with her as a ten-year-old and she made me share the bed with her even though she had a spare room with an empty bed in it. It's livened up with a design of sock monkeys and bananas. I also think I've been experiencing something akin to hot flashes, and considering I did have a grandmother who went through early menopause in her late 20s, I'm mildly alarmed.

Today I:

1. Packed all of three boxes. In my defense, two of these were big mirror boxes, which suck to put together. I also bubble-wrapped all my framed posters, which was not exactly a blast.

2. Filled a prescription and trekked all over for masking tape. (All over = two stores.)

3. Went to the UPS store AGAIN for bubble wrap. (See #1.)

4. Endured possibly the most painful pedicure of my life. PUNCHING MY LEGS IS NOT A MASSAGE, NAIL TECH. I'm kind of meh about the results too, but getting a pedicure is just something I feel compelled to do whenever I move. Actually unrelated, but I also have the hugest bruise on my shin that hurts so much, and I have no idea where I got it.

Please tell me I'm doing a good job and totally have time to see Drake Bell in concert tomorrow?

I used tooth whitener for like five minutes today, and I am confused why my teeth aren't instantly sparkly-fresh, like in a denture cream commercial.

And okay, I need a to-do list because I function better when I can cross things off.

to-do tomorrow )
mizzmarvel: (MLP Rainbow's 20% cooler - boxofdoomage)
My incredibly vast list of goals for the long weekend:

* Read six books
* Write two stories for work (one done, one to go)
* Write my next Dimestore post
* Paint my nails
* Watch the Netflix disc I've had for like a month (two-thirds done)
* Laundry
* Shower at some point fiiiiiine, done

So far, I've mostly been lounging. Maybe I'll call this "pre-working." In any case, I just discovered that all three seasons of Hoarders are streaming on Netflix, so there goes my weekend.
mizzmarvel: (wonder girl adorable - mignolagraphics)
Three things to be happy about:

1. When I leave work now, there's still a bit of sunlight left, which is just enough to make the crushing weight of the world on my shoulders seem like it's not going to destroy me at any moment.

2. My birthday is in less than a week. Almost another full year of not wandering into an open manhole and dying!

3. Today I just felt kind of off-and-on tired instead of totally exhausted. This is actually something to be pleased about.

Actually, here's a funny story: when I was in high school, I came in second place in a Optimists Club speech contest. The topic was "the future," and every other speech was about how scary and depressing the future seems, considering current events and so forth. (The winner actually opened with a booming, foreboding, "HOMOSEXUALITY" as her opening entry of List of Worrisome Things, and for years my dad and I would continue to mock her awful, awful speech.)

Having seen the word "optimists" in the club name, I figured it was a clue and delivered a really lighthearted speech that poked fun at how easy people of my generation have it. And I referenced Fibber McGee and Molly, because name-checking pop culture phenomena I have no firsthand experience with is how I roll, which probably worked in my favor, since none of the judges were under 800 years of age. I still have the silver medal I won. I laugh every time I see it.

too much

Things I am tired of:

1. Packing (is there no end in sight?)
2. Laundry (two loads tonight, more tomorrow)
3. My cat taking this as an opportunity to climb on things and knock stuff off shelves
4. Worrying about the move (Saturday afternoon)
5. Tendinitis

The end, amen.

another list, for my benefit )
mizzmarvel: (christmas lights - misce_lee_eous)
Today's major accomplishments:

1. Actually mailed my international holiday cards (did those first so I could just go to the post office rather than deal with stamps), then went straight to the bank, walked a mile to the library and then back, and picked up groceries on the way home.

2. Collapsed onto my bed with exhaustion.

3. Baked a potato for the first time (I have sub-remedial cooking skills).

4. Watched some Hoaders, which freaked me out so much that I cleaned up my junk mail pile.

5. Wrote some probably nonsensical captions for work; I'll pick at them later.

Tomorrow and the next few days are going to be much busier, but it'll all be worth it on Friday, when I get a week of vacation time.
mizzmarvel: (eomers_elf - bucky)
Top accomplishments of the day:

1. Lots of work-work done.

2. Wrapping presents for the child I'm sponsoring this Christmas, even though my cat wanted to stretch out across the paper, nuzzle all the presents, play with the tape, etc.

3. Write 700 words of Yuletide.

4. Change pretty much all my passwords EVER. THANKS GAWKER.

Awful news to wake up to:

1. Greg Giraldo died

2. Tony Curtis died

3. Torrential rain today

What I did this weekend:

* Some work stuff for work
* Two loads of laundry
* Made my bed
* Dishes
* Grocery shopping
* Shaved legs
* Read several books (mostly BSC, one for-grownups non-fiction)

What I realized this weekend:

* I really would have rather just laid around.

mizzmarvel: (velvet-y! - art by so_spiffed)
I haven't been this tired this early in a long time. I believe these are the reasons:

5. Podiatrist appointment, so lots of extra walking.
4. Temperature in the 80s, humidity 80% or so.
3. Went into work an hour early.
2. Extremely poor shoe choice, which made walking extra taxing.

And the number one reason:

1. Spanx.

You don't realize until you're wearing a body shaper or pantyhose or something just how being constricted like that can take up a lot of extra energy. On the plus side (I guess), I found out that my upper threshold for Spanx-wearing is 9.25 hours.
mizzmarvel: (skeleton dance - tropic_icons)
1. Having access to the Internet for realios. I was three hours late to work due to waiting for the Time Warner tech, but thanks to a shiny new modem, the wireless is working like a charm.

2. Manicures. I have one! It's nice! Screw spring/summer colors, I went with deep brown-y red. I suspect it will chip in about twenty seconds.

3. My iPod. I have about eight billion songs on it, and I've only filled about 8.5 GB. Technology is amazing -- the future is now! I'll expect my jetpack any day now.

4. When my cat decides my hand smells terrible and gives it a horrible, sandpaper-y bath. Good to know someone's looking out for my hygiene.

5. The presidency and history thereof. If you're as fascinated by it as I am (and really, who isn't), enjoy this list of beloved presidents doing wretched things. Also awesome: [livejournal.com profile] madri's picks for worst president ever.

6. When my mom calls! Okay, that's a lie, because actually she always has terrible news. Tonight's call was particularly upsetting. It wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't obviously giddy with excitement about passing along the heartbreak.

mizzmarvel: (tommy's sick - context)
Too blargh for full sentences. Bullet points:

* Woke up sick, eventually felt a little better
* Did taxes
* Went to McDonalds, carried food all the way to Heather's on a hurty foot, only to discover the order wasn't complete
* Celebrity Fit Club
* Went back to McDonalds, almost yelled at the guy in charge until he gave me a card to reimburse me for lost food
* Got home, now in too much pain to take a shower, take off clothes, wash face, etc. Cat may go hungry
* Wisdom tooth removal tomorrow, so this'll be extra fun
mizzmarvel: (namor - killing honkeys since 1939)
Today it was bitterly rainy and windy, but I had six books on hold at the library, so I decided to make the 15 block journey there anyway. This resulted in:

* Me standing ankle-deep in water in the flooded subway station
* Almost getting hit in the face by a metal door that was flung open by the wind
* Stopping every other minute to adjust, try to fix, and curse at my increasingly broken umbrella
* Making the discovery that several of my books were much larger and heavier than anticipated
* Going, "Eh, fuck it" and deciding to just walk home
* Stopping by the grocery store without considering the difficulties of managing my book bag, broken umbrella, and grocery bag in torrential rain
* Deep bruises on my wrist from managing those groceries

When I got home at 2 PM, I put on my pajamas and have not left the building since. No regrets.
mizzmarvel: (ugly betty fiver - noeffingpostage)
Here are the things I've accomplished today:

1. Bought these rain boots. I think they're the cooliest. They're a size too big, but they seem all right.

2. Did laundry. This is important because otherwise I smell bad. And I cannot abide by this.

3. Cleaned a little. How much kitty litter can one cat track into the living room? Answer: nine tons.

4. Finished an awesome YA. Seriously, it's wicked great.

5. Made my bed. Discovered my mattress cover has already ripped right down the middle. So much for hypoallergenic-ness.

Here is what I'm going to do in a little while:

1. See Eugene Mirman perform! :DDDD Mir-man, man of the sea!
mizzmarvel: (statler and waldorf = my secret soul)
1. Kathy Griffin is really funny live, but I recommend not eating a big meal beforehand. At least not if you're like me, who gets drowsy easily. Like, I was entertained and laughing the whole two hours, but dosing off at the same time? It was weird.

2. There is a zit inside my nose, and it hurts.

3. I am very tired, so the list ends there.
mizzmarvel: (drake & josh - lunarwolfik)
Today I'm going to concentrate on the positive parts of the day.

1. Snowpocalypse was kind of pretty sometimes.
2. Rib patty sub at Subway was surprisingly delicious.
3. Guy at Subway gave me a free cookie.
4. Little to no acid reflux.
5. Got a seat on the N nearish to rush hour with no trouble.
6. Lots done at work today.
7. Mom finally went to the doctor, more or less okay.
8. Probably some other stuff, maybe.
mizzmarvel: (marvel girls - icon_teahouse)
Taken from a few people:

Comment with the name of a female character (in any show, movie, book, comic, etc that you think I'm familiar with) and I'll tell you one thing I love about her. In return, you can do the same in your journal (if you like!).

Now, to plan my evening. Should I, A) Start working on my freelance?; or, B) Sit around eating Gobstopper Snowballs and reading trashy YA novels?

I think we know the answer.
mizzmarvel: (cedric! dude! - bellezzadiamore)
Here are things I'm possibly/probably going to do in February:

* See the Harlem Globetrotters battle to the death with their deadly enemies, the Washington Generals (I can only assume). I sure hope they win, but I also hope there are some crazy tricks along the way!

* Go to a Kathy Griffin standup. Maybe she'll share some hilarious anecdotes about other celebrities!

* Go to a Eugene Mirman standup, which will probably make me laugh until my stomach hurts, and then eat a bag of fire.

I'm going to be poor, but I'm looking forward to it.

And completely unrelated, but [livejournal.com profile] horsescanswim sent me a beautiful drawing of Ms. Marvel, all the way from the UK! I need to scan it because it's AMAZING. ♥
