mizzmarvel: (spidey/torch catfight!)
I don't do recs as often as I should, but here's one for you: Johnny/Peter and their sex luggage from [livejournal.com profile] traincat. She really captures everything I want and love about the couple--their friendship and chemistry and ease together. Peter/Mary Jane is my Spidey OTP in the mainstream Marvel Universe, but Peter/Johnny is the only thing I ship in Ultimate.

Speaking of which. Er. I feel like a jerk for saying it, but I have serious mixed feelings about Miles Morales. It actually has nothing to do with Miles himself; I think it's awesome to have a person of color in such a major role, and to reexamine the concept of Spider-Man from a new POV. But I love Ultimate Peter so much that the concept of him dying is irrationally upsetting to me. Like, I know there's a very good chance he'll come back at some point. I'm not new to this. I feel incredibly stupid to be feeling like, "WHY YOU KILL MY PETER HE'S A BABY." But that's where I am. And I know this is how some people felt about Ted dying and Jaime becoming Blue Beetle, and they got over it, and so will I.

I know a part of it is me feeling betrayed by Ultimate Marvel. I was really against Ultimate when it was launched (long story, but I thought Quesada was hypocritical in championing it), but I came to love it and embrace it. But slowly, surely, it betrayed me by basically killing off scores of characters, writing them OOC for the sake of DRAMAZ, and just being gross. I mentioned in Dimestore once that shortly after Wasp was killed in 616, she was killed in Ultimate and was shown being eaten by the Blob in a full-page spread. This shit isn't the Marvel I love. It turns my stomach that there are so few comics I can wholeheartedly recommend to minors these days. (And I had recommended Ultimate Spider-Man to young teens, several times.)

Anyway. Enough whining, more drinking Pumpkin Spice Silk.

ETA: Apparently the post to the Johnny/Peter drabble is locked. Oops! I rec it anyway.

ETA: It's unlocked! You can read it now!

fic recs?

I feel like dipping my toe into a few new fandoms. Anyone got any recommendations for:

1. Criminal Minds, Hotch/Reid. I'm mainly interested in this because I have a shameless crush on both of them.

2. Captain America (movie only), Bucky/Steve. Howard Stark/Anyone. Dum Dum/[livejournal.com profile] mizzmarvel.

When I got off the subway today, it was just starting to rain. By the time I was inside, it was pouring, with thunder and lightning like crazy (my ability to tolerate these things = almost nonexistent), and you know, eff that noise. It's the kind of night to take an extra-hot shower, use my most delicious autumn-smelling body scrub, and be in my coziest pajamas by 7:30.

Then pizza came. It had pineapple on it, and all was right with the world.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] entwashian posted this pic spam featuring the hotness of Karl Urban. It is a continuation of all that is right in the world.

I recommend this community because I know someone who runs it, and she's one of the awesomest people I know. She does some killer graphics too.

Also, Psych is pretty coolio, even if I haven't finished the second season yet. I'm telling you, buying DVDs is a curse for me -- whenever I spring for one, I almost immediately lose interest in watching it. See also my dust covered Star Trek DVD, my unfinished set of s3 of Veronica Mars, etc.
mizzmarvel: (watchmen babies - hinksia)
There's this fic writer (I won't mention her name), and I only read her Star Trek Reboot stuff. As in, I don't read the work of any other writer. Just her. And while she primarily writes my favorite pairing, she's...not that amazing.

Don't get me wrong -- she's very good! I love her work. But I was reading her stuff tonight, and I was like, but is it good enough for me to be reading exclusively?

And I realized -- I used to be a lot more adventurous in my fic reading. At one point, I was much more willing to dive in and explore new authors, pairings that weren't my OTP, and sometimes even work from fandoms I was unfamiliar with. (I got into SGA through fic before ever seeing an episode of the show.) And now here I am, reducing myself to one author, in fear of getting burned.

So! What I want are fic recs. Any pairing, any rating. I'm still a little gun-shy about jumping into uncharted fandoms (though I'll give it a shot if you swear that the fic is the best thing EVAR), but here's a sampling of what I'm interested in right at this instant: BSC, comics (Marvel, DCU, Wildstorm), Disney, ST Reboot, SGA, fairy tales, Glee, Chuck, Newsies, Harry Potter.

Random fic, your friend's fic, your own fic. Please? I would be ever so grateful. There's no one whose fic'ly opinions I trust more than you. <3

Okay, so in theory I still write BSC fic occasionally, and at the very least I do read it, along with an insane number of the actual books. So take my word for it when I say that you need to read Byron and Too Many Boys, being posted one chapter at a time by [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory. It's one of the best BSC fics I have ever read, seriously. It's hilarious whether you know the source material or not (and even more so if you do).

This morning, I stopped at a Starbucks and could have sworn I saw Joaquin Phoenix there -- he had the profile, the beard, the coloring. But later, after consulting the Internets, I realized that the Starbucks guy not only seemed to have trimmed his beard in the last eight months and lacked the distinctive bloated drunk face, but also appeared to have taken a shower somewhat recently.

And then I felt very sad.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] khirsah wrote Kyle/Connor!

For those of you who have not read [livejournal.com profile] kokiri85's Kon and the Superbuddies comic, you should do so right now. It's amazing and deserves about ten pages worth of feedback.

I wish with all of my heart that these were pages from an upcoming comic where Kon and Ted are alive and Max was never evil, but instead I'll just console myself with the fact that it looks and reads like a published comic. It's beautiful and funny and just impeccable, and go look at it.

First, a meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] pre_emptive:

Reply to this post, and I will write one thing I love about you. Maybe more than one. Then (if you want) repost to your own journal and spread the love.

Secondly, a rec! [livejournal.com profile] quirkytaverna has written a wonderful Byron/Jeff fic, A Perfectly Good Memory Ruined By Air Supply. (I'd love the title even if I hadn't read the fic.) Like, seriously, I didn't even have to get more than halfway through to realize that it had already become one of my top five favorite B/J fics of all time. Jeff's voice is done wonderfully, she has a different spin on Byron than one normally sees, and their banter is really awesome. A++

Also, we saw Wanted today, since being unemployed means lots of spare time to go see movies. It was a lot of fun to watch, even if the "twist" was kind of obvious from about two seconds in. I recommend it if you're into smart, witty action movies. Very violent, of course, so maybe avoid if you mind seeing a lot of blood.

Today I bit into the most delicious apple ever. Like, seriously, my taste buds went crazy for this apple. Crisp and juicy, sweet and tart, with just a hint of spiciness. This apple was just bursting with Jonagold glory. Wow, it was a good apple.

I still got tired of it after about a minute.

It made me think of Beezus and Ramona, when Ramona takes a single bite out of every single apple in the house, reasoning that the first bite is always the best. And also that I can never tolerate apples for long.

Also, in case you were looking for some awesome fic, try No Place for Heroes by [livejournal.com profile] appending_doom. It's DuckTales/Goof Troop/Darkwing Duck fic, and just. Wow. It's laugh-out-loud funny and sweet and kind of awesome, guys, and the character observation is right on the money. It's just a joy to read.

For Christmas, I gave my little brother a Target gift card. This was right before he moved up north, so I figured it was a very sensible and useful gift. There was a Target near his new home, so he could use the card for clothes, food, or essentials, and I would be guaranteed that he would not use the funds on drugs. I patted myself on the back for my genius.

Shortly before the move, he spent the card on a football.

And he left the football here.

Boy, did I yell at him.

Now I kind of feel for him, though, because I have this $40 Target card, and I know I should save it for my likely move to Ohio. I might be short on cash immediately after relocating, after all. But man, do I just want to rush out and buy something pretty.

(Also, I want to read Sirius/Remus. A lot. This probably has to do with the fact that I currently have this as my desktop background. (Worksafe and pretty non-slashy, FYI.) Have I pimped this before? If not, I should have. [livejournal.com profile] kokiri85 drew it for me! Her art often ends up on my desktop, actually.

ETA: Apparently, the image is locked. This is the second time tonight I've tried to pimp a flocked post. Boo and bullfrogs.
mizzmarvel: (charlie brown - beat again!)
So basically, all the nerve-wracking stuff has hit me all at once.

1. We are moving to a new apartment late this week/early next week. The new place is smaller and I kind of hate it, but we're going anyway, and it is very hard to pack about six years of junk. I'm a pack rat, and every scrap of paper is my treasure, and how could I possibly part with this insignificant birthday card I received when I was fourteen and forgot even owning?

2. My little brother, is has been decided, is going to try his hand at moving up in northern California with our older brother, near Eureka. I'll be going up there next week with him and my dad, and while that doesn't seem like too big a deal, California is a very long state, and we're close to the bottom.

3. My Internet pretty much sucks more than ever, and man, that's just frustrating.

4. It has come to my attention that my quest for a better job, doing something I actually like, has not met with anything approaching success, and probably never will, so maybe I should really get cracking on grad school stuff to make myself more competitive in the job market. My former yearbook adviser points out that if [livejournal.com profile] scalderwood can get into graduate school, anyone can. (She also said I could tell him she said that.) The only problem - grad school research, applications, the GRE, et cetera take time and effort, and boy am I lazy.

Anyway, I have not yet read all there is to offer at [livejournal.com profile] jbbs yet, for a variety of the above reasons, but I do have to rec A Fever Still Within, the story written for me. Owen Mercer is a really compelling character who's mostly been sitting around doing nothing recently, and this is such a realistic, amazing fleshing out of his character, with some Tim interaction thrown in to sweeten the deal. It's really, really awesome. I have had a great string of gift fics from JBBS, and this one's no different.

Speaking of which, let me rec the year-old Thunderstruck by [livejournal.com profile] vagabond_sal, which is hilarious and in character and entrenched perfectly in canon. He actually managed to use the most obscure character I asked for, which placed him in my heart of hearts forevermore. I also love this fic because it was the gateway to me making a good friend. *smushes Jeff*

And while I'm at it, Gift-Giving, a Byron/Jeff fic that was a gift from [livejournal.com profile] lizzypaul last year, is also rather amazing. It's a sweet Christmas story where Byron and Jeff just seem to be figuring things out. Sometimes I go back and read this fic and wish I could convey so much emotion and confusion with so little.
mizzmarvel: (story - becs1024)
[livejournal.com profile] vagabond_sal and I met up today for lunch. He plays mean games of Rock, Paper, Scissors and Marvel Vs. Capcom, but the next round will be mine, sir!

ETA: Yeah, he sums up the day a lot better than I did.

We also went and saw Hollywoodland, because, you know, Superman. And it wasn't that bad! Generally, if Bob Hoskins is in a picture, there's got to be some worth. Mostly it made me want to live in 1950s-era Hollywood. I guess I have a few more thoughts on the film, and I'll just spoiler cut that for you here. )

On a completely unrelated note, I must pimp the most cracktastic and wonderful bit of fanart I've seen in a long time, the wedding of Dick and Tim. I never knew true laughter before I saw bitter, pre-inebriation Babs, her hat, and a possibly Prozac-influenced Alfred.
mizzmarvel: (angel - ashandsmoke)
Per advice received in the poll, I dutifully did some research for my senior thesis tonight, and even ordered a few more books. (Matt Groening's advice for those putting off actually writing their thesis is, "Read another book!" Sound advice, I say.)

But then of course I wrote some Blue. I mean, if inspiration walks into my house, I'm not just going to ignore it until it wanders away or subdue it with a baseball bat; I'm going to offer it tea and some nice scones, coddle it and give it all the attention it needs.

(I don't think that made any kind of sense. Whatev.)

Speaking of Byron/Jeff, did you know that [livejournal.com profile] khirsah wrote me some more? Everyone interested should go read it, ASAP. (Not suitable for minors, FYI.)

Let me take this opportunity to completely fangirl [livejournal.com profile] khirsah: any of you who read fanfiction and are not reading her stuff should do so, and promptly. I've not read any piece by her that has not completely stunned me in the best possible way; I've even read pairings by her that I have no interest in or even actively dislike, and still loved them. She has the most terrific insight to characters, and even the briefest PWP has both remarkable style and substance. In short, she definitely gets my seal of approval.
mizzmarvel: (blue fic)
[livejournal.com profile] khirsah WROTE ME BYRON/JEFF.

Just. Yes. Yes yes yes. Everyone and their mom (except mine) needs to read this. If it helps, she called it Blue fic rather than BSC fic, which makes me preen and strut around the room like a moron. Also, it's, uh. Porn. Good porn! *nudges everyone along*

ETA: Whoops. Link fixed!

ETA again: Okay, really fixed now. *headdesk*
