Dear the world,

I am home, I am mostly in one piece, and I am exhausted. I don't have the energy to put sheets on my bed, let alone talk more about my "vacation." But I made it out alive, baring the possibility of me dying of a blood clot from sitting still too long on the plane (thanks for letting me in on that, Dr. G: Medical Examiner).
mizzmarvel: (christmas lights - misce_lee_eous)
Well, I leave for the airport in less than an hour. Considering I'm still in my PJs, snuggled under the blankets, maybe I should think about getting a move on. But it's cold and I'm nervous and wah!

I'm not taking my computer for the trip, and while I can probably check my email a few times via relatives' computer, I doubt I'll be able to LJ. So, I'll be back on the 28th! (Hopefully.)

Yuletide author, thanks in advance. :)

Before a flight, I always go into a prolonged last meal mentality and indulge myself in whatever I want to eat. (And then go, "Why have I gained so much weight?") Today I made a poor life choice and got a very big meal at Shake Shack and then proceeded to die of acid reflux all day.

And now I'm sitting here, preparing to consider getting ready for bed since I need to get up at the wee morning hours, hyperventilating about the plane.

Also, my leg hurts.

It's been an awesome day.

Yuletide is finished and uploaded! Woo!

Now with that out of the way, I can devote myself to concentrating on freaking out about my flight on Tuesday. I HATE FLYING SO MUCH. I have Xanax to get me through it, but the thought of getting on an airplane is bringing tears to my eyes. And I've never been on a flight so long on my own.

I do things like research the airline (JetBlue) and the kinds of jets they use and the engines to try to calm myself down. And I went with JetBlue for the TV, which will probably distract me, and yes, I have plenty of Xanax. But still, God, I hate flying.
mizzmarvel: (andorian shingles! - entwashian)
I knocked a few things off my To Do list today, and tomorrow I'll be finishing up others or deciding not to do them at all because apparently the blizzard that ate Manhattan is being projected to roll through over the weekend. I don't care as long as it's done and clear on Tuesday, when I leave. I'm already nervous enough about flying; flying into snow is too much for me to comprehend.

Anyway, I went to the rheumatologist today, and he thinks it's more likely that I have fibromylagia than arthritis. Score?

Okay, not actually. But I'm glad to be getting somewhere.

And thanks for the holiday cards, [livejournal.com profile] derien and [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel!

Things to do before leaving on Tuesday:
Pretty much for me, but look if you want )

Also, I forgot the worst thing about getting new glasses -- breaking them in. My prescription went up a little, and thus coming home from work today I was hideously nauseated on the subway. Good thing I didn't completely lose it, or I'd have gotten the fun chance to be the person everyone hates on the train. That is, the person who gets sick and slows it down for everyone.
mizzmarvel: (garth fears - presidentrix)
I wish I could remember when I started being afraid of heights, in case knowing could help me pinpoint a way to get over it. Because unlike most people, my fear of flying isn't due to the enclosed space, but to an intense awareness of being miles in the air.

At this point, if I could get to the point where my hands don't sweat upon seeing people on flights on TV, I'd be happy. I'm not going to be optimistic enough to assume that I'll stop dreading my Christmas season flights months in advance.

in flight

Tonight, after much freaking out and wibbling, I booked plane tickets to Arizona for Christmas. It's not that I don't want to see my family, because I do -- I haven't seen them in over two years, in fact -- so much as I'm scared silly whenever I'm on an airplane. However, last time I flew, I went JetBlue, and having TV to watch really helped, so here's hoping I get through it.

But on the plus side, guess what my family's city has? Yes yes, mountains, roadrunners, casinos -- and DEL TACO. My truest love and I will be reunited! And I don't even have to wait to get there; I'm flying into Las Vegas, which according to DelTaco.com has 22 glorious locations! I actually booked my flight to ensure I got in around lunchtime. I PLAN AHEAD. Also in my future: In N Out, Wienerschnitzel and Sonic.

ETA: Speaking of delicious food, [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory and I split an order of chocolate-filled ableskivers after work. And they were good.

Thanks for the gold star, anonymous!

In other news, I'm flying to New York tonight. Needless to say, I feel like I'm going to throw up, which is interesting when paired with the fact that I haven't eaten today and I'm pretty hungry. Also, I tried to shove my earrings back into my ears, only to discover that they'd both closed completely. So now I also have a headache and no earrings. My life is exceedingly difficult.

Anyway. Don't know how long I'll be gone, but I'm taking my laptop this time and the place I'll be staying has Internet, so I'm sure to bore you all with the more of my inane trivialities.

P.S. Why is the theme song from Arthur stuck in my head? I don't mean the movie either - I mean the theme from the PBS animated show about the bespectacled aardvark. Which I have seen maybe one episode of, when I was in high school. Curse you, Ziggy Marley, why is this even on my iPod?
mizzmarvel: (riddle me this)
Okay, so I have limited experience with suitcases (I've only owned one set of luggage, which is now nearly four years old), but is it just mine that makes clothes smell horrible, or is this just a suitcase thing?

Because yeah, it seems like putting only clean clothes into a not-unclean suitcase would result in later unpacking clothes that maybe aren't exactly pine fresh, but are still wearable. Instead, it usually results in clothes that smell as if hobo with only a vague understanding of what a washing machine is has been trekking through cattle country and wearing them every single day for a week. To my knowledge, this is not the case at all.

For my part, I just Febreze the heck out of my luggage and hope for the best.

My thoughts are so deep.

Also, I would like to inform the masses that my stomach is currently making noises that sound like the slow opening of a creaky door in a horror movie. Something else to put on my resume?

Yesterday, when I booked my flight, I was all, "Yeah, I'm scared of flying, but this time I don't have to fly out tomorrow so I can be all chill and schedule this without freaking out. Screw the train - JetBlue costs $15 more for seven hours less travel!"

Well, that relaxed attitude lasted all of twenty-four hours. AUGH I HATE FLYING I AM AFRAID.

I guess it's a good thing the rumors about $0.25 In-N-Out burgers are false, because then I would have had to fly out to the West Coast posthaste. Screw not eating beef, I would have filled my carryon with cheeseburgers.

I'm back in North Carolina! Amtrak was only, um, an hour late or so, but otherwise the trip was fairly pleasant. I slept a lot, read a little. Good times.

When I got home, my cat was unusually affectionate. I don't know if it was because I had been gone for a week or if she's going through a new phase, but she voluntarily got into my lap about three times tonight, which is about as many times as she'd gotten into my lap previously, throughout the entire eight months or so we've had her.

(I like to think it was because she missed me. I missed her too.)

Not tmi so much as a little gross )

All day today, when the church bells chime, they play "The Star-Spangled Banner" or "My Country, 'Tis Of Thee." I didn't go into the city for any of the ceremonies, but that alone was enough to make me a little solemn and thoughtful off and on throughout the day.

I'm going back to North Carolina tomorrow. I never heard anything either way, but I'm assuming I didn't get the job. Oh well. I missed my stupid cat anyway.

Still in New York. I haven't heard anything about the job, but by now I'm assuming I didn't get it. I'll know definitively by the end of the day, though. I'm just glad that they were straightforward about when they'd be making the decision, so I'm not hanging around for too much longer, wondering what's up.

Anyway, the friend I'm staying with got cable and Internet yesterday, so hooray! I'm in the major cultural center of the country - arguably the world - and I'm probably going to stay inside all day and watch TLC and Discovery Health Channel! It's like a dream come true.

I'm leaving for the airport in like six minutes, and I feel like I'm going to vomit. What a good way to psych up for the interview! I should be in New York around 7 PM.

Thanks for all the good luck messages! I'll try to phone post a couple times while I'm out there. Also, if you want to entertain me with texts or phone calls during my Internetless adventure, it would be much appreciated.

Something I forgot to mention:

When we were in New York, we went to Mood because we're lame Project Runway fans, and I think I might have seen Joe from the current season.

The previous time in the city, we saw Harold from season one of Top Chef. (Admittedly, we were walking to his restaurant to eat at the time, so not a huge surprise, but still! <3 Harold!)

For me, New York City is the land of reality show contestants, I guess.

ny, day 2

Yesterday was better than the day before.

In the early afternoon, I met up with [livejournal.com profile] suyari around her home turf (which happens to be near where I'm staying), and we went to lunch at scenic Burger King. We didn't do too much more than eat and talk, which was fine by me because it was super hot yesterday, and while it gets mega hot in Jacksonville, we don't tend to walk around in it so much. It was low-key and nice and relaxing and just what was needed.

Later I went into the city and met up with [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory, even though I was 15 minutes late because at one point I got convinced that I was on the wrong train. We went to the American Girl store, which was AMAZING and now I want a little girl I can take there and probably not spend money on (one thing that has never changed about the AG brand - the prices), and then the Disney store, where she bought me this rubber duck (amazingly, the tattoo on his biceps just says "Pirate"). As expected, when the two of us are faced with several floors worth of Disney merchandise, we can say some pretty ridiculous stuff, and we actually managed to find a salesperson who seemed to think our talk of Mickey cannibalizing his nephews was hilarious. He was actually kind of creepy and probably wanted to make us his brides. We escaped pretty quickly.

Afterward, we got foods. Tuscan foods! They were good. And now I've been working on this entry off and on for a couple hours and should really cease.

The most exciting thing about my trip to New York so far (for me, anyway) is that they have more kinds of Vitamin Water here than in North Carolina. It's enough to make me swoon.

Things will get better shortly, as I'm meeting friends today. But will that beat getting to know my first bottle of Peach-Mango? Only time will tell.

Have I mentioned that I'm going on another trip tomorrow? Well, I am. We're driving up north and will arrive sometime on Monday in New York, probably leaving on Wednesday or Thursday. I'm not sure if I'm bringing my laptop along, so the possibility of being on the Internet at all is up in the air.

For someone without a job, I sure seem to be going on a lot of vacations lately, but. Well. I have the time, and I get to stay somewhere for free. So the expense won't be that bad.

I wish I could say I'm going for an interview, but nope! Not the case. For me, it's just something to do.
