I don't think I've ever done a fan casting before. But today it occurred to me that while I've seen several that feature the BSC members as older teens, I can't remember seeing one that cast people in their actual age ranges.

For those who never read the books or haven't picked one up in years, the original baby-sitters were 12 when the club started, eventually aging to 13. Two 11-year-olds were added to the club later. The covers tend to make the girls look like older teens or even young adults, which downplays the fact that people are hiring 6th graders to care for their infants.

Anyway, facts: Kristy and Stacey were the easiest to cast. Claudia was the hardest. Mallory's bitchface delights me. All of these kids range in age from 11 to 14. I hope my Google Image searches this afternoon don't land me on some sort of FBI watch list.

Say hello to your friends )

Actually, this is hilarious and I would read that fic so hard and probably gleefully email [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory about its wonders. As happens. There are some terrible fics out there, and somehow the fact that they're BSC makes them all the more amazingly awful.
mizzmarvel: (mary anne/tigger - entwashian)
I've realized that when I think about who I'd like to ship with Mary Anne, my primary concerns are:

1. Do their personalities differ enough to make it interesting?

2. Will it make Kristy's head actually explode?

Which is why, though Kristy/Cary is probably a more popular pairing (it's a little too alpha-alpha for me), I actually really love Cary/Mary Anne. Best friend + sworn enemy = KRISTY IS ACTUALLY CATATONIC. And while I don't think anyone has ever actually written it, I really, really love the idea of Sam/Mary Anne. Best friend+ annoying older brother + the thought of them making out = KRISTY BEATS UP THE WORLD. As an added bonus, Stacey's head would also explode!

I'm trying to think of something to post, but my brain keeps going CRAMPS CRAMPS CRAMPS CRAMPS so I can't concentrate.

Did I mention I have cramps?

Also, did I mention that my Yuletide writer, [livejournal.com profile] zelempa, drew a cover to Byron and the God of California? This one? The original of which I now own, because she's super cool and lives and works absurdly nearby? Also, she did not murder me, which is generally my first concern whenever I meet new people. I'm still not entirely sure that that hasn't been my roommate's goal all along.

I reread Mallory and the Ghost Cat this morning. Usually, I don't reread the BSC Mysteries as often, because I find them pretty stupid, but I definitely like the earlier ones, where the girls just solve more simple problems, like where a ring disappeared to or what's going on in Mary Anne's attic, more than the later ones, where they're actively solving serious crimes.

Anyway, this exchange between Mallory and the triplets made me smile:

"...I don't think the people who run Stoneybrook Manor are going to let you guys in dressed like that. You'd better put some clothes on, okay?"

The three of them looked at each other. Byron was wearing one sock and a pair of Bart Simpson surfer shorts. Jordan was wearing a pair of Mets sweatpants--and that was all. Adam was still in his He-Man pajamas.

"I think we look great!" said Adam, grinning at me. "Better than
you, you dweeb."

Unfortunately for Jeff, this is still Byron's go-to sleep ensemble.

This book is also near and dear to my heart because it inspired one of my favorite, delicious-only-to-me childhood snacks. In the first chapter, Mallory makes English muffin pizzas. When I was about 11 and first read the book, I thought that sounded fantastic, but I had no English muffins. Or any cheese. And I was leery about using the broiler.

But what I did have was some Prego, flour tortillas, and a microwave. I lathered a tortilla with Prego, topped it with another tortilla, then nuked it for fifteen seconds or so. Mmm, south of the border spaghetti sauce sandwich! Magnifique! What is embarrassing is the frequency with which I enjoyed this gross snack.

This weekend's to-do list )

I'm rereading BSC books today, and this passage from Dawn and Too Many Sitters caught my eye:

As soon as we had arrived home from the airport, Richard had ordered from my favorite pizza place. We'd all sat around the table, talking about the summer. Jeff had been so excited, he'd forgotten to tell jokes for awhile. He'd asked about all his friends and had even run around the backyard by himself awhile, just "to get connected." He was actually cute.

I love Jeff Schafer more than words can express.

In honor of this, I'm offering five BSC drabbles tonight. Just give me a prompt and a pairing. I can't promise I'll get them all done tonight, since the heat wave is still making my computer all wonky, but I'll try.

I'm not big on AUs. I mean, I enjoy reading them sometimes, but I rarely have the urge to write them (Kristybrook notwithstanding). But of course, since seeing How to Train Your Dragon yesterday, I've been starry-eyed over the idea of Byron and Jeff as dragon-riders. But it's difficult, because being from THE COAST (because Stoneybrook isn't on the ocean, except when it is), Jeff is probably more used to riding sea serpents. Meanwhile, Byron has to share his dragon with seven siblings (counting Margo, even though she throws up every time she gets in the air).

Someone should write this for me.

But frankly, I want an AU where I ride dragons even more.

Notes: [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory and I have come up with an AU BSC world -- Kristybrook -- that is at times both very silly and very dark. The first vignette, here, really sets the tone. The second is here. This world is not fun party times. More to come.

So, there was this event tonight at Scholastic celebrating the release of the Baby-sitters Club prequel and rerelease of the original series, and I went with [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory, [livejournal.com profile] chicken_queen and [livejournal.com profile] wanderingfrog. And it was wonderful -- Ann M. Martin was there, along with David Levithan (author of many awesome books, but also an editor for BSC), and there were all kinds of memorabilia, and the refreshments were character themed. (Popcorn and pretzels for Kristy, brownies for Mary Anne, candy bars for Claudia, and fruit and sugar-free cookies for Stacey.)

And the Q & A was very nice, and at the end everyone got a signed copy of The Summer Before. AMM and DL were totally gracious and awesome and good-humored about the whole thing, but the best part, I think, is being in a room filled with people just as awestruck and thrilled to be there as I was. That, hey, there were strangers who also know and care who Laine is, and that there were two Sabrina Bouviers. It was cool to be in a room full of people geeking out over something that's been so important to me for over half of my life -- kind of like going to a comic book convention for the first time, but less insane.

Also, I didn't wear my Kristy costume. Missed opportunity? Perhaps.

If I combine this new shirt with my Chucks, I can create a kicky Claudia Kishi-inspired theme ensemble!

The feeling I had upon coming up with this: unbridled glee.

Unfortunately, I don't own the perfect bottoms to complete the look, which would be Namor's scaly hotpants.

Many moons ago, [livejournal.com profile] leah1878 requested a DVD commentary for my BSC fic The Allure of Sweater Vests. And by many moons, I mean three years to the month.

Anyway, I got around to it. Enjoy! Belatedly!

Way back when, when I got my Yuletide assignment, I was a bit vexed about what I was going to do. My recipient wanted femmeslash. I don't write it a lot, but I can do it. She also wanted characters I've never written for, but fifteen years of continuously reading BSC books has pretty well prepared me for writing any and all characters in the series. She also wanted a story that was happy.

That was what tripped me up. I had a million ideas for depressing or at least bittersweet fic, but nothing overtly happy. But I didn't want to be a jerk, so I put my nose to the grindstone and tried my best. The first attempt was so awful that I can't bring myself to share it. It also wasn't totally happy anyway. But the second, I felt, was pretty decent. I only abandoned it because I realized it was going to be way too long to finish in time. But in case you're curious, here it is.

The untitled Abby/Dawn project )

...it's always a good sign when I stop mid-sentence. For some reason, I just can't do BSC wedding fic. This is the second one I've dropped despite liking the idea. The first was Byron/Jeff (they weren't the ones getting married).

Okay, so in theory I still write BSC fic occasionally, and at the very least I do read it, along with an insane number of the actual books. So take my word for it when I say that you need to read Byron and Too Many Boys, being posted one chapter at a time by [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory. It's one of the best BSC fics I have ever read, seriously. It's hilarious whether you know the source material or not (and even more so if you do).
mizzmarvel: (mary anne/tigger - entwashian)
This fic was posted to a friends-only comm which is no longer maintained, so I thought it'd be a good idea to repost it hereabouts. Nothing new, more of the same.

Notes: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] marcyleecorgan and [livejournal.com profile] papel_luna for encouraging this fic that never should have been written. I'm sorry for the suck. Takes place before the mainstream BSC series.

I'm a problem )
mizzmarvel: (mallory)
From a BSC book I'm reading:

"Anyway, we laughed at the part of the letter about Jeff -- how he's been calling you names all this time, and then he cried after you'd left."

- A letter from Mallory to Dawn

My first thought was, okay, Mallory's so going to be Jeff's least favorite sister-in-law someday. What a tool! But then it got me to thinking: Is this actually how people from less dysfunctional families think?

Because, my little brother and I? Tortured each other. We beat each other up. We both knew what grossed each other out the most and used it against each other. He knew what insults cut me to the core, and I knew just the right words to make him break into tears.

And yet, when my mom once dragged me across the floor by my shirt, screaming, and I retreated to the bathroom to hide, my little brother sat by the tub to protect me. I have thrown myself over his cowering body to protect him when he was getting hit by a belt and taken the hit. We could make fun of each other, we could hurt each other, but no one else was allowed.

My little brother called me names as soon as he could talk, but on the day I left for college, yes, he did cry.

So, in the first case, Jeff being upset at his sister running away makes sense to me. Just because he teases her doesn't mean he wants her to be in danger -- he loves her. And if someone told me they laughed because my brother was crying and genuinely upset about something, there'd be hell to pay.

That being said, no seriously, Jeff hates Mallory.
